Performance anxiety. We all have it from taking a test at school or a job interview to the athlete before a competition, a writer suffering from “writer’s block,” a musician before a concert or a dancer or actor before a performance. We have all been there – and will continue to be to one degree or another. Sometimes we can “push through,” control our nerves and “just deal with it.” But what do you do when the situation becomes so overwhelming that you feel you can’t handle it?

As the majority of our conscious behavior is rooted in the subconscious, the “will power” of the conscious brain is not enough to correct consistent patterns of behavior that are not working for you. Hypnosis has been used as a therapeutic tool for centuries. It is a safe, drug-free method that allows you to gain access to your subconscious and re-write your mental scripts in a positive direction. Contrary to popular belief, you are not “asleep” during a hypnotherapy session. In fact, once your body is completely relaxed, your mind is actually more alert than in your normal waking state.
Hypnotherapy works on the principal of ‘suggestibility,’ but you are always in control while in hypnosis. You cannot be made to say or do anything which would conflict with your personal ethics and/or desires. It is interesting to note that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs recognizes hypnotherapy as an effective treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in its returning veterans; and celebrities and other public figures have used hypnosis to quit smoking, lose weight, increase self-confidence and even reduce symptoms of extreme morning sickness.
Sara R. Fogan is a certified hypnotherapist based in Santa Clarita, California. She received her M.Phil. in psychology from Goldsmiths College, University of London. In June of 2005, she graduated with honors from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute and opened her own practice in Valencia, California. She regularly attends conferences and participates in continuing education courses at HMI to expand and improve her skills.
